Treatment
Treatment Works!
Day One has been providing counseling services to families and adolescents for over 30 years, empowering teens and families to make healthy choices about drug and alcohol use. Our treatment services are tailored to best meet the needs of each adolescent.
Day One offers a variety of treatment options in different settings, from Outpatient to Residential-based programs. Through treatment, hope, healing and recovery can be achieved.
Juvenile Drug Courts
Day One provides case management services to four Juvenile Drug Treatment Courts, located in Biddeford, Portland, West Bath and Lewiston. The case management provided by Day One ensures the coordination of care and services for participants of each court.
This year-long program is designed for adolescents with substance abuse problems and a high risk of committing future crimes. It allows the adolescents to stay out of jail while making significant and meaningful life changes.
The Juvenile Drug Treatment Courts are a collaboration among the Maine Department of Behavioral and Development Services, the Maine Department of Corrections/Juvenile Services, Maine District Courts and Day One.

Residential Treatment Center
For more information, call 207.929.5166 or email bonnied@Day-One.org0>
Day One’s Residential Treatment Center provides a holistic approach to the treatment and recovery of substance abuse. Adolescents come from communities throughout the state. The program offers a long-term intensive therapeutic community for up to 12 male and female young people (ages 16-24). A graduate completes treatment in one year.
The program is a highly individualized and structured approach in which residents are guided to establish clearly defined personal goals. The goals become increasingly challenging as the client progresses through the program. The environment fosters and encourages resident participation in 12-step programs. Clients attain the ability to make the positive choices and decisions essential to leading a healthy, chemical-free and recovering lifestyle.
Admittance through Referrals - Referrals for admittance come from a variety of sources including, but not limited to: self-referrals, parents, probation officers, Maine’s Juvenile Drug Court Program, Long Creek & Mountain View Youth Development Centers, attorneys, The Department of Human Services, schools, and other collaborative sources (substance abuse programs, group homes, homeless shelters, mental health case workers, and private therapists).
Individual & Group Counseling - Each resident is assigned a primary counselor who coordinates the resident’s program and meets on a regular basis. Family therapy, when appropriate, is intended to improve communication and to work toward possible integration with the family.
The Educational Program - All residents are required to participate in Day One’s fully accredited on-site school program. For those clients who have their high school diploma, they may continue studies toward college credit. There are regular staff-student evaluation team meetings to review strengths, progress and goals.
Recreation and other Therapeutic Activities - Residents participate in a variety of activities such as hiking, camping, plays, skiing, Martial Arts, cookouts and day trips. These activities teach them new activities and sports, and encourage them to choose healthy activities.
Aftercare - 18 months of aftercare support and counseling is available after completing the year-long program. Graduates obtain housing on their own, live with their families or rent an apartment in Day One’s Transitional House for Recovery in Portland.
Youth Development Centers
Maine has two youth development centers: Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland and Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston.
Research continues to show that nationally more than 75% of incarcerated youth have substance abuse problems, and a large percentage of those also have emotional/mental health issues. In the State of Maine more than 85% of youth committed to Long Creek and Mountain View present with a substance abuse disorder. There is a very high correlation between substance abuse and criminal behavior among adolescents.
Day One provides substance abuse screening & assessments, and individual, group and family treatment services for youth. Additionally, Day One assists in delivering an intervention group program that is designed for ‘self-improvement and change’. The focus is on cognitive skills development and the integration of these skills into daily living.
Assistance and referral services are also offered at the time of discharge to help with their transition back into the community.
